More than 2,000 people occupied the street outside the Israeli embassy in West London today to protest at the bombing of the Gaza Strip.
Initially the police tried to contain people in a small area behind crowd barriers, but as hundreds of angry protesters arrived they surged across Kensington High Street up to the gate that blocks the road on which the embassy is situated.
The air was filled with slogans including “End the siege of Gaza”, “Israel is a terrorist state”, “No Justice, no peace” and “Free Palestine”.
A wide range of protesters joined the protest including families with baby buggies, groups of young people and pensioners. All were outraged by Israel’s continued bombing of the Gaza Strip.
Kensington High Street was occupied for several hours. However protest thinned out as darkness fell. Police then moved in to reopen the road. They faced shouts of “Shame on you” as they arrested some protesters.
The demonstration was supported by Stop the War, British Muslim Initiative, Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Friends of Al-Aqsa, Muslim Council of Britain and others.
There were protests in other cities, including Glasgow.
Further protests have been called for Monday and next Saturday.
