DENOUNCE THE ANTI-HOMOSEXUALITY BILL IN THE PARLIAMENT OF UGANDA. PROTEST AT THE UGANDA DIPLOMATIC MISSION IN YOUR COUNTRY

Dear Partners, Allies and Friends,

As you already know, the "Anti-Homosexuality Bill 2009." was recently tabled before the Parliament of Uganda. The Bill's provisions are draconian and among them are;

Any person alleged to be homosexual would be at risk of life imprisonment or in some circumstances the death penalty;

Any parent who does not denounce their lesbian daughter or gay son to the authorities would face fines of $ 2,650.00 or three years in prison;

Any teacher who does not report a lesbian or gay pupil to the authorities within 24 hours would face the same penalties;

And any landlord or landlady who happens to give housing to a suspected homosexual would risk 7 years of imprisonment.

Similarly, the Bill threatens to punish or ruin the reputation of anyone who works with the gay or lesbian population, such as medical doctors working on HIV/AIDS, civil society leaders active in the fields of sexual and reproductive health, hence further undermining public health efforts to combat the spread of HIV;

All of the offences covered by the Bill as drafted can be applied to a Ugandan citizen who allegedly commits them - even outside Uganda!
The existing law has already been employed in an arbitrary way, and the Bill will just exacerbate that effect. There is a continued increase in campaigns of violence and unwarranted arrests of homosexuals. There are eight ongoing cases in various courts. Four accused persons are unable to meet the harsh bail conditions set against them. As a result, Brian Pande died in Mbale Hospital on 13th September, 2009 as he awaited trial.

Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG) calls upon you our partner, ally and/or friend to action. Denounce this bill through a protest at a Ugandan Diplomatic Mission in your country on November 9th 2009, where applicable. Urge the Government of Uganda to reject this Bill in its entirety.
For your reference, please find attached two press statements released by SMUG and Ugandan Civil Society as well as a copy of the bill that was tabled in parliament.

Last week I went to Naher Al Bared. It was the first time i go to the Camp after the war (between the Lebanese Army and Fateh al Islam) ended. I went there in order to shoot a short documentary about Palestinians without IDs.
I was only permitted to go to what is known as the "New Camp". The "Old Camp" became a totally restricted area after the war. Many who had the chance to go there said that the place looks like Hiroshima, nothing less. Many of the Palestinians I talked with said that there's no single building left... everything was smashed.
I had no permission to shoot but I managed to take some pictures in the "New Camp". despite the fact that the "New Camp" was not totally destroyed, the mass destruction struck you in the eyes! with hundreds of buildings bombed and many others burned.

'بالشوكة يا نتالي! أم انّك تعلّمت ان تأكلي بيديكِ كما يفعل الفلسطيني!' تلفت اليَّ مستهزءًا حين مددت يدي لأتناول حبّة البندورة من زاوية المائدة. لم تتعدّ اقامتي في لبنان أسبوعها الأوّل بعد وذلك إثر عودتي من غزّة، حيث مكثتُ من عشيّة العدوان الاسرائيلي حتّى أواخر شهر تموز (يوليو).
لم أتوقّع ان تتفوّق قصصي مع العنصرية والشوفينية 'الوطنية' والتمييز الجنسي في لبنان عما عشته من مآس في القطاع. فمنذ وصولي الى هنا اخبرتني صديقة عن 'حديث اهل الحي' بأني قد 'احببت فلسطينيا وذهبت لاراه في القطاع.' او عندما طال بقائي في القطاع قالت احداهن لجدتي:'ما تكون اخذتلها شي فلسطيني هناك وصارعندها اطفال.'
لم يمضِ أسبوع على وصولي حتّى اُلقيَت كلّ جرائم العنصرية والكره للفلسطيني عليَََّ. فكانت أوّل ردّة فعل من الأقارب: 'لما فعلتِ ذلك؟!'؛ هذا الممشى مش ممشانا! نحن مالنا ومال القضية الفلسطينية!'
وقد سألتني جارتي، وهي امرأة عجوز: 'بصراحة يا نتالي، انا ما بطيق الفلسطينيه؛ لا تزعلي منّي.'
والأفظع من ذلك هو عندما قالت لي 'قريبة' بغضب واشمئزاز: 'لا تتحدثي معي باللهجة الفلسطينية!' و'أنا من طائفة (كذا) ومن منطقة (كذا) وأفتخر بأصلي!'
ولكن لم يغِظني شيء أكثر من مقابلة أجرَتها معي صحافية بريطانيّة.
اذ تناولت ما قلت بشكل أساء اليَّ والى كل ما أؤمن به وأناضل من أجله. في مقالها أطلقَت الصحافية اسم 'المهمة الانسانية' على زيارتي غزّة وكسر الحصار رفقة الناشطين المتضامنين. وأردفت انّي داعمة لـ 'إعادة توطين اللاجئين' وأنّي أتوجّه للحكومة اللبنانية لكسر الحصار'- يا للهول! فالحكومة اللبنانية هي في الأصل دولة مبنية على سياسة الهوية وليست دولة لجميع سكانها وتقوم على التمييز العنصري ضد الأقليات كما هي الحال في مخيمات اللاجئين الفلسطينيين في لبنان التي يمكن وصفها بأنها معازل عرقية! وكما هي الحال مع العامل السوري والفلبيني والسريلانكي والاثيوبي وغيرهم من الاقليات- مع الذكر انه من قبل ايام قليلة ورد تقرير في صحيفة 'الاخبار' اللبنانية عن عدم السماح للعاملات الاجنبيات النزول الى مسابح المياه وهذا تجسيد بسيط لـ 'ابارتهايد لبنان' حسب تعبير المفكر اللبنابي جلبير الاشقر. ولا يمكننا الا وذكر ما تتعرض له المرأة اللبنانية من تمييز جنسي في قوانين الأحوال الشخصية وفي عدم سماح الدولة اللبنانية لها بإعطاء جنسيتها لأطفالها او لزوجها.
كانت هذه الكلمات أفظع من مواجهة الـ آف16 والآف15 والأباشي و(الزنّانات) والبوارج والدبّابات. وأكثر كرها من رصاص الجنود الاسرائيليين فوق رأسي عند مرافقتي للمزارعين على أرضهم، وأكثر قساوة من التعذيب النفسي والجسدي الذي تعرّضت له مع عدد من المرضى والجرحى الفلسطينيين على المعبر الى 'الحرية': نقطة تفتيش شارلي- معبر رفح.
وبينما هم يتحدّثون ويتعصّبون ويكرهون ويكرهون ويكرهون، تمرّ بـالبال كلمات أغنية 'حدّوته مصرية': 'شفت كل شيء وتعبت على الحقيقة، قابلت على الطريق عيون كثير بريئة، عرفوني لاء ما عرفونيش. قبلوني وقبلتهم، أمدّ ايدي لك- طب ليه ما تقبلنيش؟ لا يهمّني اسمك، لا يهمّني عنوانك، لا يهمني لونك ولا ملادك، مكانك. يهمّني الانسان ولو ما لوش عنوان... يا ناس، يا ناس يا مكبوته هي دي الحدّوته!'-هذا ما تعلمته من اهل القطاع.

اللجنة العليا للأساتذة المتعاقدين الثانويين....نحو الإعتصام المفتوح

عقدت اللجنة العليا للاساتذة المتعاقدين الثانويين اجتماعا طارئا في الجنوب، وصدر عن الاجتماع بيان، جاء فيه:"انه بعد الوعود "العرقوبية" التي قدمت للمتعاقدين من قبل الوزيرة، وبعدما تبين لنا خطورة ما يجري من مجزرة حقيقية ستنفذ في حق المتعاقدين وعائلاتهم مستقبليا ومستقبل اولادهم من خلال منعهم التعاقد لهذا العام، وبعدما تبين لنا فظاعة مايجري داخل الوزارة في ظل غياب الحكومة والمجلس النيابي" من تعيينات عشوائية مصلحية تدخل فيها المحسوبيات والاعتبارات الطائفية، قررت اللجنة وبالاجماع: عدم جدوى الطرق الديبلوماسية الحوارية مع الوزيرة بهية الحريري، عقد مؤتمر صحافي كبير وواسع تشترك فيه الجهات النقابية والعمالية، الخطوة الثالثة والاخيرة اقامة اعتصام كبير ودائم امام باحةالوزارة تنصب فيه الخيم وتعلق اليافطات والاعلام اللبنانية وصور فخامة رئيس الجمهورية".

وحملت اللجنة العليا للمتعاقدين وزيرة التربية، "المسؤولية التي ستقع بعد ذلك، لانه لم يعد لدينا الا هذه الوسيلة والتي لن نتركها لانها سلاحنا الاخير والوحيد".

Who Profits from the Occupation?

In a much criticized television commercial for an Israeli cellular communication service provider, a group of Israeli soldiers play soccer with unseen (presumably Palestinian) partners over the separation wall. “All we want, after all, is to have some fun”, the commercial exclaims. As distasteful and offensive as this commercial may be, on some level it calls on us to expose the ties of these cellular companies to the occupation. As the following report from Who Profits from the Occupation can show, for all we know it might be that the invisible players behind the wall are just the Israeli cellular company workers, at work deep inside the Palestinian territory.

All Israeli cellular communication companies are commercially involved in the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and the Golan Heights. These companies build infrastructure, maintain property and equipment in illegal Israeli settlements, much of it on privately owned Palestinian lands. They all provide services to the Israeli military and to all Israeli settlers, and some provide specially designed services. They use the Israeli control of the Palestinian territory to exploit the Palestinian frequencies and to impose their services on the Palestinian captive market.

Currently there are four Israeli cellular communication service providers: Cellcom, Partner (Orange), Pelephone and MIRS. Cellcom is part of the IDB group, a conglomerate of Israeli and international companies, one of the major players in the Israeli market; Partner is a subsidiary of the Chinese Hutchison Telecommunications International (HTIL); Pelephone is fully owned by Bezeq, the Israeli Telecommunication Corporation; MIRS is a subsidiary of Motorola Israel.

All four have dozens of antennas, transmission stations and additional infrastructure erected on occupied Palestinian land: MIRS holds at least 86 antennas and communication facilities on occupied territory, Cellcom at least 191, Pelephone 195 and Partner 165. As a survey by Yesh Din reveals, many of these antennas and communication facilities were erected on confiscated privately owned Palestinian land. Often, these devices are guarded by Israeli guards, and at least in one occasion, they were used as seeds for a new settlement outpost. Using this infrastructure, the companies provide services to Israelis in these areas, both to the settlements and to the Israeli soldiers operating in the occupied West Bank.

"الأمان في مكان العمل" ...يطيح بعاملة

لم تدرك عطية ص. أن مأساتها لن تنتهي بحصولها على فرصة عمل، بل أن الوظيفة نفسها ستقودها إلى الموت.
عطية تعمل منذ شهور في معمل في الشويفات لتصنيع الأوراق والأكياس البلاستيكية. في يوم الحادث، أي في 4/8/2009، حضرت العاملة الفقيرة كالمعتاد عند الساعة السابعة والنصف صباحاً لتشغّل إحدى المكنات في الطابق الثاني من المعمل حيث كانت بمفردها. أرادت أن تساعد زميلتها التي تأخرت عن العمل فأدارت آلة لم تعمل عليها سابقاً، للآلة جنزير ضخم لم تدرك الضحية خطورته، اقتربت منه فافترس فولارها، علق الجزء المتدلي من الحجاب بالآلة، شدها الجنزير بقوة ليصطدم وجهها بالآلة، ويشتد طوق الحجاب على عنقها بقوة، ما أدى إلى خنقها ووفاتها فوراً دون أن تتمكن من طلب النجدة.
اتصل صاحب المعمل مباشرة بالقوى الأمنية لتحضر كالمعتاد بعد ساعة، ومن ثم حضر الطبيب الشرعي ليكشف على الجثة. عند شيوع خبر موت عطية هجم ذووها على المعمل، طوقوه، عبروا عن غضبهم بالتهديدات بإضرام النار بالمعمل وتكسير محتوياته، وهددوا صاحب المعمل بالقتل. لكن الغضب تم «تطويقه» مع تدخل جهات حزبية نافذة في المنطقة أفهمت ذوي عطية بأنها قضت ضحية حادث عمل.
بعد التدخلات «الحزبية» تراجع ذوو الضحية عن تهديداتهم، كما أنهم رفضوا قبض فدية أو أي تعويض تدفعه شركة التأمين، إذ إن صاحب المعمل متعاقد مع شركة لتأمين بوالص لموظفيه.
موت عطية أثار حزناً كبيراً، فهي امرأة ثلاثينية وأم لطفلين، أرادت أن تجد وظيفة لتعيل الولدين، إذ إن زوجها يرزح في السجن لارتكابه جنحاً مختلفة.
وفاة عطية تدفع المعنيين بحقوق العمل إلى طرح السؤال مجدداً عن مدى تطبيق قانون العمل الذي يفرض على أصحاب الشركات والمؤسسات إلى تأمين السلامة العمال والموظفين في أماكن العمل. كما يُطرح السؤال عن الإهمال الذي يطبع عمل المكلفين بمراقبة المؤسسات والمصانع المختلفة ومدى تطابق مكان العمل ومحتوياته مع شروط السلامة العامة.

اتحاد نقابات الطباعة والاعلام: للتحرك لحماية الضمان الاجتماعي

دعا اتحاد النقابات العمالية للطباعة والاعلام، في بيان اليوم، الاتحاد العمالي العام والاتحادات النقابية وجمعيات المجتمع المدني، الى "التحرك للوقوف في وجه الهجمة الشرسة التي يتعرض لها العمال وذوي الدخل المحدود"، كما دعا الى التحرك من أجل حماية الضمان الاجتماعي كأهم مكسب حققته الطبقة العاملة منذ صدور قانون العمل والى اصلاح الوضع في الضمان الاجتماعي واعادة التوازن المالي الى كل فروعه".
واشار "الاتحاد" الى "ان بداية الهجوم على حق العمال، كانت في قرار منع الحسومات من قبل الصيدليات وتأمين الدواء الى المنازل، والثاني من قبل نقابة اصحاب المستشفيات على الضمان الاجتماعي والتهديد بوقف استقبال المضمونين او تحميلهم فروقات التعرفات التي قررها اصحاب المستشفيات. والهجوم الثالث من قبل نقابات الاطباء التي قررت منفردة زيادة تعرفة المعاينات الطبية بنسبة 100%.

ألفاً هو عدد العمال النروجيين الأعضاء في كبرى النقابات النروجية التي أعربت عن استعدادها، أمس، للدعوة إلى مقاطعة

إسرائيل إذا لم تنه الدولة العبرية احتلالها للأراضي الفلسطينية، وما لم توقف سياسة الاستيطان وجدار الفصل. وقالت النقابة، في بيان صدر على هامش مؤتمرها السنوي: «ما دام يحق للإسرائيليين والفلسطينيين أن يعيشوا في سلام وأمن، فعلى الحكومة الإسرائيلية أن تتحمل مسؤولية عدم توافر ذلك، ولا بد من التفكير في الدعوة إلى مقاطعة دولية وتأليف لجنة تحقيق لكشف حقيقة أي انتهاكات للقانون الدولي».

BEIRUT: Over 70 Lebanese citizens were greeted by Interior Minister Ziyad Baroud Saturday as they assembled at the ministry building in Beirut to remove the indication of their religious sect from their national identity cards. The gathering comes two months after Baroud issued a decree allowing citizens to erase any mention of their religion or sect from their official state records.

"It should have happened decades ago," Baroud told event organizers during a meeting before going outside to witness the crowd. "It's a step toward creating a real civil society in Lebanon."

The timing of the event was also symbolically chosen to take place the weekend before the 34th anniversary of the 1975-90 Civil War, which was marked on Monday.

According to a ULDY, statement, about 200 people removed their sects from their IDs Saturday in Beirut and several other towns including Aley, Hammana, Jbeil and Saghbeen.

The minister also said he expects citizens who conceal their sect to run for a Parliament seat in future elections as an "experiment" to see how Lebanon's sectarian electoral law would hold up under the circumstances. The current 1960 electoral law only allows citizens of a particular sect to run for Parliament in each district.

"Baroud met with us to show his support and reassure us that our actions are allowed for by the Constitution and are within our rights of freedom of religion and belief," ULDY president Arabi el-Andari said. "Freedom of religion means having the freedom not to believe and not to disclose your religion."

ULDY, a left-wing secular youth group comprised mostly of communists, often holds events across the country to promote issues like civil marriage and a secular state. It is also active in the boycott campaign against Israel and regularly calls for protests outside businesses with ties to the Zionist state.

Not all citizens who met at the ministry Saturday were ULDY members. Many journalists sent to cover the event finished up their interviews and jumped in line alongside others to have their IDs modified.

One middle-aged woman, Fawzie Ali Sharife, brought her young child who stood on the sidewalk holding a sign that read: "My sect is meaningless. My country is my only concern."

Sharife, like many others present at the ministry Saturday, said she remained faithful to her religion but believed the government had no right to identify its citizens by their sects.

"What's between God and myself should remain between us and not have to go through the state," she said. "As a Muslim, I believe in all human beings as equal, just like the communists that are here believe we are all equal. Anyone who disagrees with that is not human."

فلنشطب طوائفنا!: بيان عن التجمع اليساري من أجل التغيير

النظام الطائفي في لبنان هو من أهم وأقدم الأزمات التي يعاني منها البلد، منذ إنشائه حتى الآن. وقد برهن هذا النظام أنه آلية رثة ومتخلّفة ليس باستطاعتها إدارة شؤون البلد وشؤون مواطنيه. وقد تم إنتاج هذا النظام الطائفي في لبنان، منذ البدء، كنظام لإدارة الأزمات وليس لحلها، إذ انه يعتمد على إنشاء توازن رعب بين الطوائف. والخطير في هذا التوازن أنه ليس توازناً سياسياً، بل موازنة ما بين سجون اجتماعية وسياسية واقتصادية، تصادر حرياتنا كأفراد بشتى الطرق.

تستأثر الطوائف اليوم من خلال الطائفية السياسية بقرارنا السياسي، كما تتحكم بمصيرنا الاقتصادي من خلال التوزيع الطائفي للوظائف الرسمية وخضوع عملية الإنماء للابتزاز الطائفي وسمسرة من يحمل راية "حقوق الطائفة" في كل ما يتعلق بالإنفاق الحكومي. ومن جهة أخرى تتحكم الطوائف بحياتنا الاجتماعية اليومية لما تملكه من تفويض يخولها البت والتشريع في مختلف جوانب الأحوال الشخصية للأفراد.

ومن أخطر الأزمات التي أنتجها هذا النظام هي الحرب الأهلية اللبنانية التي دامت 17 عاماً وراح ضحيتها مئات الآلاف بين قتلى وجرحى ومهجرين. ولم تقف كوارث هذا النظام على هذا الحد، بل تلت الحرب الأهلية أزمات سياسية حادة كادت تودي بالبلد إلى حرب طائفية دموية جديدة. أزمة تلو الأزمة، يثبت لنا أن هذا النظام يشكل أحد أشد الأخطار التي تواجهنا وأن سلطة الطوائف على حياتنا هي إحدى أبرز المعوقات أمام تطورنا وتقدمنا. يوم بعد يوم يظهر لنا جلياً ضرورة تحطيم هذا النظام والانتفاض على سلطة الطوائف التي تكبلنا.

اليوم، وقد اقترب تاريخ 13 نيسان ذكرى الحرب الأهلية، بات لنا خيار أن نبايع هذا النظام الرث من جديد ونبقى رهائن لدى أمراء الحرب، أو أن نعلن رفضنا له ولكل الكوارث التي أنتجها من خلال شطبنا لخانة الطائفة من سجلات نفوسنا. إن هذا الإجراء يشكل خطوة ملموسة على طريق تخطي هذا النظام المتخلف. فكلما ازداد عدد الذين يرفضون التصريح عن انتمائهم الطائفي كلما فقد هذا النظام مشروعيته أكثر وأكثر. وبقدر ما يكثر عدد الشاطبين لخانة الطائفة من سجلات نفوسهم، بقدر ما يزداد الضغط على هذا النظام وعلى سلطة الطوائف على حياتنا.

ولإيماننا بأن هذه الخطوة ضرورية جداً في عملية تخطي النظام الطائفي، ندعوكم للمشاركة معنا في تقديم جماعي لطلبات شطب خانة الطائفة من سجلات نفوسنا، رفضاً منا للعيش تحت حكم هذا النظام المتخلف وإعلانا عن رفضنا لأن نكون ضحايا حرب طائفية جديدة،

Lest We Forget So Never Again? Think Again

In the early 90’s, when the Lebanese civil war, seen by some as the war of others, was “officially” over, its clan chiefs and warlords were crowned as our care takers, becoming, by God’s will, the guardians of peace. During that period, conciliation from above was made. “What is past is past,” they said. The conciliation translated into impunity for those responsible for the war’s crimes and atrocities. The result: 17 thousand kidnapped –their fate still unknown, 300 thousand wounded and handicapped and a million displaced without proper compensation.

This is then how the war started and ended like nothing has ever happened. An amnesty law was issued on the 26^th of August 1991. Those who had committed crimes during the civil war up until the 28^th of March 1991were granted amnesty. Some were even granted the highest-ranking government positions in the “new” republic.

The General amnesty and evading accountability

The 15 year war was characterized by a rare level of brutality and genocidal massacres and other criminal activities. Lawyer Kamal Dagher says that the amnesty law was issued not only to erase all that but to resurrect its symbols. it also “permitted moving war leaders from barricades and check points to the highest places of the present state, something that was done over hundreds of mass graves and the bodies of more than 150 thousand killed and hundreds of thousand wounded and handicapped, not to mention big scandals including the disposal of hundreds of tons of poisonous wastes all over the Lebanese land, from sea to high mountains. The country witnessed as well the abuse of public money and vandalizing of property and the spread of a corrupt authority rarely seen elsewhere”.

It should be noted that 17 years after the end of that war, thousands of families are still asking about their sons, brothers, mothers and fathers who have disappeared. They know nothing about their fate: if they died, they don’t know who is responsible and where they are buried, or under what conditions.

Dagher wonders: “if the general amnesty means oblivion and forgiveness, then who could forget, and who has the right to forgive? And which civil peace can be built on oblivion and forgiveness that ignores the need to confront the truth, even a small part of it, and guarantee a minimum level of justice?”

In this regard, Amnesty International affirms that on one side, the amnesty law “guarantees to the human rights violators the evasion from punishment and on the other side prevents the exposure of the truth.” The organization adds: “Lebanon won’t know real and sustainable peace, and Human Rights won’t be protected unless the country faces his past through procedures allowing the investigation in the war period and showing the truth regarding Human Rights’ abuses that were committed in the context of the conflict the country witnessed”.

Thus, a general amnesty that isn’t accompanied by accountability and recognition of past mistakes, represents a law which preserves the ugly image of the war, thereby increasing the chance of its renewal, as long as the country and state are rebuilt, once again, by the same old leadership entrenched by the Taef agreement. These leaders are ready and set, at any time, to play the same blood shedding role that they once played. And today they continue to mobilize people on the basis of sects and confessions, accompanied by the rearming of some of them. And that is how, says Kamil Dagher, “we find ourselves in a vicious circle: the sectarian structure of the country and the absence of accountability produce civil wars, in which war crimes are committed, as well as Human rights abuses. Afterwards, pause periods occur through general amnesty laws, thus accountability is absent and collective evasion from punishment will occur. This is a reality that keeps the fire under the ashes, hence storms will eventually clear out the ash and the fire will be ignited once again.”

Bassem Chit, one of the activists in the “People’s Court” a campaign that was launched in April 14, 2007 and called for the abrogation of the amnesty law, says: “we cannot go forth unless accountability for the mistakes and crimes of the past is conducted. He who killed his people in wartime cannot be entrusted to build peace. He who kidnapped and tortured on the basis of sectarian and racist divisions cannot and should not be entrusted to build civil peace.”

In the 19^th anniversary of the cease fire, the war hasn’t ended yet. The war is still ongoing in various forms and all of us have a role to end it. Young men and women with no horizon for better future, students and workers along the production lines, we all have to move our country from the present situation towards fully transcending the sectarian structure. Then, another society can be built, a transparent one, based on continuous accountability, where no one can escape from retribution or reconciliation. Together, we should stand against this political class that decided to step over every essential notion in the experience we lived in war and peace and gave us a pseudo country, a pseudo dream, a suspicious present, a suspect future, all wrapped with an amnesiac memory and at the bottom a gapped memory! Only then…we can safely and confidently say “Never Again”!

Bahrain: An Asian Worker Loses his Life in the Worst Deterioration of Ethnic Tension Yet,

I see it important here to publish the following statement issued today by the Bahrain Center for Human Rights and the Bahrain Youth Society for Human Rights, that describes the ethnic tension the society is witnessing, instigated by the policies of the Bahraini authorities… it’s a long statement, but it worth reading.

1. An Asian Worker Loses his Life in the Worst Deterioration of Ethnic Tension Yet
2. A growing sense of hatred towards all foreigners, due to the Bahraini authorities employment of foreign mercenaries to suppress protests and attack protestors.
3. The Bahraini authorities instigate 'clashes' with protestors, and later use 'clashes' as an excuse to increase repression, justify further repression, and as part of a smear campaign against opposition activists

The Bahrain Center for Human Rights and the Bahrain Youth Society for Human Rights note with great sorrow the news published in the local press on March 22 regarding the death of Sheikh Mohammed Riyad, a Pakistani national (58 years old). Mr. Riyad died on March 21 at Salmaniya hospital as a result of burns, which according to the Ministry of Interior, he suffered after the car he was driving was attacked with a Molotov cocktail on Maameer road on March 7.

Background
The assault that took the life of Sheikh Mohammed Riyad is part of a series of incidents of violence and clashes between the Special Security Forces - and an increasing number of young youth who operate at the entrances of the Shiite villages in various areas of Bahrain, where they burn tires and garbage containers, and some of them throw stones or sometimes Molotov cocktails at the Special Security Forces. This happens within the tension of the political and security conditions in Bahrain, and the increasing decline of rights and liberties, and an escalation in the systematic sectarian discrimination by the country against the Shiite sect.

The BCHR believes that Sheikh Mohammed Riyad may not have been targeted as an individual, but rather, was a victim of the security clashes, and the increased suspicion and hatred against foreigners - especially of the Pakistani nationality - who are used widely in the National Security apparatus and the Special Security Forces. The Special Forces have been in charge of besieging and suppressing Shiite villages and areas - which witness acts of protest - and which are intensively and arbitrarily attacked with massive quantities of tear gas, rubber bullets. Special Security Forces also regularly carry out the random pursuit of individuals inside the villages, often assaulting and beating them.

The NATO is a military alliance created initially to face the Soviet bloc in Eastern Europe during the cold war. After the end of the cold war, the NATO countries refused to dissolve the organization and continued to be the mecanism by which the USA and its occidental allies impose their hegemony on the world and wage wars (Kosovo and Afghanistan), and menacing many countries like Russia through the employment of a missile system near its European borders. A military organization cannot claim preserving peace! And the NATO cannot continue to exist by creating a ficitionnal enemy like terrorism, Iran or Russia, because the possibility of war exists only because the NATO country are profesizing it! The NATO has been only a danger to peace, and a threat to human lives and democracy. Moreover when a country joins the organization, it is supposed to be at a certain military and technological level, hence the Eastern European countries had to pay billions of dollars in order to be up to the level while social inequalities are staggering, and economic difficulties are hardly being handled. Many militants from around Europe are expected to march to Strasbourg, and many demonstrations are expected to take place around the world in order to protest against NATO, t

he occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan. The French and European authorities are expected to take extreme security measures which migh be the following: more than 15000 security men are to be deployed, the closing of the Schengen area, the creation of at least two security zones in the city, the closing of schools and the market, in short there will be no space for a democratic protest unless it is 10km away from the NATO meeting!
Facing those fierce security measures there will be an international peace conference held by the militants in Strasbourg, an alternative village will be co
nstructed, and an international demonstration on the 4th of April.
Each individual is concerned! wherever you are organize collectives to demonstrate and protest in you countries against this imperialist organization! If you were in Europe then come to Strasbourg to show those war-presidents a nightmare!
The world is facing a dangerous financial and economic crisis, millions are going to be unemployed: while social budgets are shrinking, military and defence budgets are constantly rising! While people are starving and being impoverished, governments are spending tons of money to buy arms and missiles to use them on defenseless population and to commit mass murders!

Join the movement in Strasbourg and elsewhere in the world to sabbotage the NATO warlords summit and show the world that an alternative is possible!
